Empty Words

Hollow words fill the room. It’s normal. It’s accepted. So, as robots, people exchange in this back and forth nugatory vocabulary. Perhaps, it’s because many feel like the words they speak… empty, depleted of what is needed to carry sustenance. Yet, just like your words carry weight, so do you. Your influence is sending shock waves to those around you, whether you are on board for this responsibility or not. What if we stopped the trajectory we are heading on, and started placing value on ourselves and those around us? Realizing that, perhaps… the words we speak can and do make a difference.

But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.

Matthew 12:36

Careless: argos idle, lazy, thoughtless, unprofitable

Careless, empty… what does that look like? If we took today, and thought about what we say, would it express our beliefs accurately? Are our words purposeful and do they carry any weight? Do we find ourselves justifying what we say because it’s easier? “It’s not that big of a deal,” “People know what I mean.” Our words offer a glimpse into the heart, whether we believe it or not. Often I have to do a heart check. What do I believe? And am I communicating that to others with my words and actions?

But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.

Matthew 15:18

You brood of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.

Matthew 12:34

Your words hold value. They are an outward expression of the heart. God, in His mercy, enabled us free will, and with His directive chose our words to be the instrument used to proclaim our hearts submission or deny our only chance at freedom.

Words Hold Value

Salvation

Your words hold value. They are an outward expression of the heart. God, in His mercy, enabled us free will, and with His directive chose our words to be the instrument used to proclaim our hearts submission or deny our only chance at freedom.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 18:21

Creation

Our words are not to be taken lightly. When the earth was formless, God chose to speak the world into existence. His power and majesty overflowed. He could have chosen any means, but He chose His voice.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

Genesis 1:1-2

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.

Psalm 19:14

The voice… how personal, yet somehow can become so impersonal.

Ultimately, we have to do a heart check. What is spewing out of our mouths? Is it pure, lovely, and of good report? (Phil. 4:8) Is their anything of worth with the words we are saying? Or is it a reflection of a hurting heart? When we answer to God at the end of our life, the things that don’t breath value will be burned up. (1 Corinthians 3:13) What will remain of your words and actions? Today is the day to offer God your life. The dark places that you have harbored the lie that your life has no value, or that your words and actions do not matter. Give it ALL to Him, and see how mightily He can use you in whatever environment or situation God has placed you in, because it is not how great we are, but what a great and awesome God we serve.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Ephesians 4:29

So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:12
